A Boeing 737-36 Meridiana jet suffered a ‘severe technical fault’ shortly after it took off from Sicily’s Fontanarossa airport near Catania, causing one of its rear wheels to fall off.
The wheel plummeted onto Catania’s popular Della Plaia beach, which was fortunately empty at the time. The plane, which was supposed to be flying to Milan’s Linate airport, was turned around by the pilot and made an emergency landing back at Fontanarossa airport.
