Visitors to Mexico often enjoy a glass of tequila or mezcal, the country’s favourite tipples, without realising that over 180,000 tonnes of the plant that the alcohol comes from, goes to waste.

Agave is grown across the country and the liquid that is squeezed out of its fibres is then used to make tequila and mezcal, with the fibres then being thrown away.
