St. Lucia’s Health Ministry is on high alert for the Zika virus after it was discovered to be present in the Caribbean by the Caribbean Public Health Agency.
While there have been no confirmed cases in St. Lucia, the Health Ministry is asking pregnant women to be particularly cautious, as the virus has been linked to causing birth defects. The Zika virus is spread by the same type of mosquito as the Dengue and the Chikungunya virus, and authorities are asking the public to aid in the efforts to reduce the overall mosquito population by limiting possible breeding grounds.
