Mayor Ed Murray says Ride the Ducks, a tour operator that uses amphibious vehicles to take tourists around Seattle, shouldn’t be allowed to operate in the city until safety issues are resolved.

The tour operator came under intense scrutiny after one of its vehicles crashed three months ago, killing five people and injuring dozens more. A subsequent inquiry found hundreds of safety violations since the tour operator was last reviewed in 2012, earning it an ‘unsatisfactory rating’. A state transportation commission recommended that the amphibious vehicles be allowed to return to service, noting that commercial vehicles that receive an unsatisfactory rating are typically allowed to continue operating during a 45-day grace period to fix the detected flaws.
