One of Costa Rica’s biggest festivals kicks off today in the rural town of Palmares, located roughly an hour outside San Jose.

The Palmares festival is a traditional celebration of Tico culture that features bullfights, a large horse parade (known as the Palmares tope), several musical acts, and carnival rides. More than a fifth of the country’s population will attend the Palmares Festival, which will host events every day until 25 January.
