Night sky ‘sea sparkles’ on the shore in Hobart

Parts of the Derwent River in Hobart have been lit up by flash mobs of billions of tiny phytoplankton (nicknamed ‘sea sparkles). Their scientific name is noctiluca scintillans which means ‘twinkling night light’ and these microscopic organisms have been creating a spectacle,  turning the water’s edge neon blue, over the last few nights in the Tasmanian city of Hobart.
