New glow-in-the-dark bike lanes for Canberra

Canberra’s first glow-in-the-dark cycling path has been built. The path links the Canberra Stadium and the Australian Institute of Sport and Canberra Institute of Technology in Bruce.

The surface looks like thick sandpaper and is similar to existing green on-road cycle lanes, but the combination of aggregate and minerals in the path absorbs sunlight and provides eight hours of illumination in the dark. This means paths can run through parks and nature reserves where street lighting is expensive to maintain, and adversely affects nocturnal wildlife. “The path emits a soft glow at night, which is a great alternative to the more traditional overhead lighting,” said the Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury.
