On 7 December 1941 Japanese air forces conducted a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. During the attack, the USS Arizona was bombed and sank, killing 1177 crewmen aboard.
Today, to mark the attack, the National Park Service, which manages the historic sites, will hold a series of special events dedicated to those lost. Ceremonies include live events and pre-recorded educational programming, all of which will be broadcast live. The final ceremony will honor the USS Arizona’s oldest surviving officer, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joe Langdell, who died in February. Langdell’s ashes will be interred in the USS Arizona. Read more: cnn.com
