Mid-winter bald eagle survey starts in Lake Tahoe

Every January, and despite the chilly weather, California’s Lake Tahoe is the location for some very particular bird-watching by some very dedicated volunteers.

Organised by the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, the keen ornithologists are on the lookout for bald eagles, the once endangered and still fairly rare national bird of the United States. The survey takes place at around Lake Tahoe because the water here doesn’t freeze and so remains a good source of food for the fish-eating eagles during the cold winter months – and therefore a good place to observe them.
