Memorial for ‘comfort women’ opens in Nanjing

The first-ever memorial dedicated to women who endured forced prostitution during World War II has opened in Nanjing, China.

The so-called ‘comfort women’ were forced into brothels that served the Imperial Japanese military during its occupation of territories in Asia, including China and South Korea, during the 1930s and ‘40s. Estimates on the number of women subjected to the practice range from 20,000 to more than 400,000. The new memorial is located in an actual former military brothel and features exhibitions with photos, articles and objects owned by the victims. Read more: shanghaiist.com
