One of London’s iconic landmarks has jumped the gun with its New Year celebrations this year.

Tower Bridge, often a backdrop for snap-happy revellers during the annual fireworks display over the Thames, wished its Twitter followers a happy 2016 at midnight – 24 hours early. A post on the bridge’s official Twitter feed, which has since been deleted, said: “Happy New Year from everyone here at Tower Bridge!” Around 20 minutes later, once the mistake had been shared widely by other users, it posted: “Oops, guess we got a little too excited there …” People were quick to mock the mistake – and similar ones made by other landmarks and businesses.

Sparkling water purveyor Highland Spring sent a message to its followers on both Twitter and Facebook which read: “Break out the bubbles – it’s 2016! #HappyNewYear.” And Nottingham Castle, which is holding a free fireworks display, posted: “Happy New Year from all the staff at Nottingham Castle!” Chris Robertson, from Nottingham, responded: “Guys. You’re a day early.”
