The largest blue star sapphire ever discovered has been unearthed in Ratnapura in Sri Lanka.

The national institute of gemology has certified the blue gem at 1404.49 carats – nearly twice the size of the Kohinoor diamond – and its value has been estimated at over US$100 million. The owner of the sapphire has named the stone Star of Adam, in honour of the Sri Lankan legend that Adam came to Sri Lanka after being banished from the Garden of Eden and took up residence on the slopes of Adam’s Peak.
