‘Hot’ tamales fall foul of customs officials at LAX

Mexican food might be hugely popular in the US but one man’s tamales didn’t whet the appetite of officials at Los Angeles Airport.

The passenger was stopped by customs authorities as he tried to bring 450 pork tamales into the country, breaking regulations about meat importing. The man initially denied that they contained pork and would have been fine if they had been the sweet rather than savoury version of the Mexican speciality, but in the end the tamales were seized and incinerated.
