Earlier in January, the Danish Finance Ministry ordered all public institutions in the country to declare how many flagpoles they had, prompting mass ridicule on social media.

Now the country’s Prime Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has offered an explanation for the seemingly bureaucratic order: he’s drafting a bill to honour Greenland and the Faroe Islands – Denmark’s two autonomous territories – on their national days (21 June and 25 April respectively) and it seems the Finance Ministry went into great detail to cost the initiative.
