India’s Supreme Court has approved a raft of new measures to curb pollution in Delhi, the world’s most polluted city.

The new rules ban the registration of new diesel Sport Utility Vehicles and luxury cars with engines larger than 2000cc, and impose steep taxes on commercial vehicles entering the city. Private taxis will also be required to convert to Compressed Natural Gas by 1 March next year. The ruling comes just two weeks before the introduction of a controversial new law banning cars with odd- and even-numbered plates from the city streets on alternate days.
