A 20-meter (65 foot) blue whale stranded on El Colorado Beach near Iquique was rescued yesterday by local residents and members of the Carabinero police force and the Chilean Navy.
The whale was discovered and immediately reported by local fishing company workers. The three hour effort involved two tug boats that eventually pulled the whale out to sea, and the navy deployed two vessels to help the whale successfully return to open water five miles offshore.
