The government of Brazil has announced plans to breed and raise up to 150 Spix macaws.

The bright blue bird is native to the country but has not been spotted since 2000. The plan calls for releasing the birds into a wildlife reserve in 2021 and taking steps to ensure their survival. Brazil’s environment ministry said they will work with entities domestically and in Germany and Qatar, which together hold the 90 surviving birds of the cyanopsitta spixxi species. The institutions will exchange birds to form breeding pairs, eventually assembling a large group in Brazil that will be prepared for release. Read more: laht. com
