Artist to install Greenland ice at Paris climate talks

The Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson is planning to install a huge ‘ice clock’ in Paris ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference which begins on 30 November.

Replicating a similar stunt he carried out Copenhagen last year, the artist will harvest 12 ten-tonne blocks of ice from a fjord near Nuuk, Greenland, and will arrange them as a clock-face on the city’s Place de la Republique, where they’ll be left to melt. Eliasson and geologist co-organiser Minik Thorleif Rosing say the installation is intended to give a ‘physical wake-up call’, and the ice used in the project is one tenth of the ice that melts every second in Greenland during summer.
