Adelaide to host Australia’s first Nutella festival

Get your spoons ready! Adelaide is set to host Australia’s first Nutella festival, appropriately named Nutella-Palooza, this April.

The South Australian city is famous for its festivals, hosting (among many others) vibrant Adelaide Fringe, world-music loving WOMADelaide, and culturally-inclined Adelaide Festival of the Arts. And while Nutella-Palooza is more specific in scope than Adelaide’s more established festivals, its appeal is surely universal.

“It was just a silly idea one night that gained momentum, really,” event organiser David Porcaro told RipItUp.com.au. “Before we knew it, people were keen, wanted to help out and see it happen,” he says. “Who doesn’t like Nutella, or some form of chocolate at least?”

Who indeed? Estimates suggest one jar of the sweetened hazelnut cocoa spread is sold worldwide every 2.5 seconds. But for those who favour more savoury treats, festival organisers have you covered too. In response to one of the festival’s frequently asked questions they are quick to point out: “We understand everyone will need a break from eating Nutella and chocolate at some point during the day so there will be plenty of food trucks on site.”

Nutella-Palooza joins other Nutella-themed celebrations on the global calendar including Malta’s Nutella festival, held in Qormi around April each year.

Adelaide’s free, family-friendly festival will feature food stalls, musical entertainment and cooking demonstrations. Though a full entertainment line-up and exhibitor list is forthcoming, both the venue and the dates have been confirmed: to get your fill of chocolatey hazelnut goodness, head to Bonython Park on Saturday, 9 April.
