World record set by 100-drone light display to Beethoven’s Fifth

Technology company Intel has set a new Guinness World Record by flying 100 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) simultaneously – synchronized to a live performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

The performance, called Drone 100, took place in Tornesch, Germany in November, but the footage was only revealed last week at the CES technology tradeshow in Las Vegas, USA.

The company controlled the drones from the ground via computers and synced a light display from the UAVs with a live musical performance.

The project was completed along with Austrian media group Ars Electronica Futurelab, and was done in an effort to push the limits of the UAV industry.

The video shows onlookers watching the drones light up, creating patterns in the sky in sync with the music, before arranging into the Intel logo.

Intel’s CEO Brian Krzanich said at the CES show that he believed the company could redefine firework displays by instead using drones.

“I see a future where fireworks and all their risks of smoke and dirt are a thing of the past, and they’re replaced by shows that have unlimited creativity and potential – and powered by drones”, said Krzanich, reports the Telegraph.
