Severe storms similar to those that lashed Sydney a week ago have hit southern Queensland, with travellers advised to expect delays and cancellations at Brisbane and Gold Coast airports. Most Sunshine Coast beaches are closed, while all Gold Coast beaches have been shut. A severe weather warning has been issued for the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands regions of northern New South Wales, where gusts of 100 kilometres per hour are forecast to develop on Friday night.
