The roulette wheels are turning again in Kathmandu after a government agreement to return licenses to casinos that were closed down for non-payment of royalties after the introduction of the Casino Regulations bill in 2013. The Casino Royale at the Yak & Keti Hotel resumed operations on the first of February, and the Casino Mahjong at Soaltee Crowne Plaza plans to start full operations from next week. Some local commentators have cited the popularity of gambling with Chinese tourists – now the second largest group visiting Nepal – as a contributing factor in the government’s change of heart.
