Anybody who is flying with Alaska Airlines on the day and wears a festive jumper will get free early boarding as a reward. Employees will also be joining in the fun and there will even be seasonal holiday music playing while boarding, all with the aim of creating a bit of holiday spirit.

“Travel during the holidays can be stressful for guests, especially those who do not travel often”, said Natalie Bowman of Alaska Airlines. “This fun promotion not only allows guests to board early on that day, but gives people another opportunity to dust off that ugly holiday sweater hanging in the back of their closet.”

Every route across the airline’s 115 city network will be eligible to participate and they will be posting some of the results on the social media accounts throughout the day. Passengers can also join in by using the #UglySweaterDay on their own social media accounts that day.

National Ugly Holiday Sweater Day is not just a quick marketing ploy made up by Alaska Airlines however. It’s been ‘celebrated’ since 2011 on the third Friday of December with the aim of bringing a little light-hearted fun back into the holiday season without any pressure to be perfect.

The campaign has also teamed up with charity Save the Children to “make the world better with a sweater” and participants are encouraged to make a donation or even host their own ugly sweater event in order to raise funds.
