In an effort to raise awareness about environmental protection, a new video shows renowned Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi performing a composition while on a floating platform in the Arctic Ocean.
The composer played a piece entitled Elegy for the Arctic in front of the Wahlenbergbreen glacier in Slavbard, Norway. The performance is part of an effort from Greenpeace to raise awareness about its campaign for Arctic protection, noting in a statement that the artist “has added his voice to those of eight million people from across the world demanding protection for the Arctic”.
The musician, known for composing music for the film Black Swan, was travelling on board a Greenpeace ship in advance of a meeting of the OSPAR Commission in Tenerife, Spain, “which could secure the first protected area in Arctic international waters”, according to the environmental organisation.
Einaudi plays his composition on a 2.6 by 10 metre artificial iceberg made from more than 300 triangles of wood, which weight nearly two tonnes.
