Don’t call Vancouver’s first cat café a victim of its own success. While the popularity of its felines has led to its temporary closure, the rapid adoption of so many animals into permanent homes is its big accomplishment for the new business.
Catfé recently announced it would temporarily shut its doors as most of its cats had been adopted.
The shop has only been open since December, but has already been booked up for weeks in advance with people looking to come in and relax with eight to 12 rescue cats at the site. Catfé is the first feline coffee shop in Vancouver, Canada, but the establishments have been increasing in popularity around the world.
The animals are provided by a local animal shelter and are all available for adoption. In its first month, the café, and the animals, proved so popular that 11 animals were adopted, reports the CBC. The remaining two cats were overwhelmed by too many people, so the café is closed until the shelter can bring more.
According to the café’s website, due to adoptions, holiday hours and bad road conditions prohibiting the transfer of animals, the café had no choice but to close.
However, they note that it does not mean there are not plenty of cats who need a good home in British Columbia, and they advise customers to visit a variety of local adoption centres.
