An intense storm has killed at least two people and caused extensive damage in the Cuban capital Havana, officials in the country said.

The Communist Party newspaper Granma said the storm damaged more than 1,000 homes, as well as hundreds of schools, shops and warehouses in the capital.

The Cubadebate website said the storm turned streets into rivers and knocked down power lines, leaving many without electricity. It said an 81-year-old woman drowned and a 24-year-old man was electrocuted by falling cables.
