The British Caribbean territory of Turks & Caicos will move its clocks onto Atlantic Standard Time this week, with the aim of increasing sunshine hours on the islands. AST is followed year-round by the Caribbean’s eastern islands; previously, Turks & Caicos was on Eastern Standard Time, which is followed by eastern US states. AST is one hour ahead, meaning that sunsets during winter – the territory’s peak tourism season – will now be at around 6pm, rather than 5pm. The switch takes place on Sunday, 8 March.
