Mindful that the Tower of London has an extremely bloody history, it seems apt that it should now play host to the premiere of Game of Thrones – one of the most popular but brutal shows on TV.

The cast of the hit series has descended on the Tower to mark the first episode of the much anticipated fifth series.

Game of Thrones continues to embrace new fans and has become a ratings topper which has surprised many of its own stars. Sky News reported Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) as admitting that he did not see that there would be such a reaction to the show across the world.

The show has gained special notoriety in particular for the violence and sex in its episodes. “It is a very violent show but I think it’s necessary,” Allen contended, adding that the nudity aspects were “relevant”.

Creator George R R Martin continues to write the books the series is based on, which means that cast and fans alike don’t know what the future holds for the series.

The fifth series of Game Of Thrones begins on Sky Atlantic next month with seven newcomers  joining the cast.

They include Jonathan Pryce as High Sparrow, Jessica Henwick as Nymeria Sand and Toby Sebastian as Trystane Martell.
