The most Instagrammed locations of 2017 have been revealed

With 2018 just around the corner, prospective travellers are no doubt busy planning new adventures for the year ahead. And while Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel campaign has already selected a group of countries, cities and regions for their dynamic and unique appeal, there is no doubt that some locations will always draw the big crowds due to their history, fame, beauty and cultural significance. With that in mind, Instagram has revealed the most documented sites from 2017, sharing a list of locations from around the world.

The results offer an interesting look at what has proved popular this year. And while the social media giant boasts a global community of 800 million, the top ten list was dominated mostly by the United States, with New York City alone scooping three of the top spots.

1. Disneyland, Anaheim, USA

Home to Disneyland Park, Walt Disney’s original theme park opened in 1955, Anaheim in southern California took the top place for most Instagrammed locations in 2017. Divided into eight different themed lands, including the famous Main Street, U.S.A and Critter Country, the attraction proved as popular as ever this year.

2. Times Square, New York City, USA

A must stop spot for any visitor to New York City, scrolling through the Times Square geotag on Instagram offers a constant stream of results from people wishing to document their time there. “Photographing Times Square was a very special moment for me. It’s my first time here and it was my biggest dream! I am here to celebrate my 40th honeymoon with my husband, that makes it a magic moment,” fashion blogger and avid Instagram user Doris Blanc Pin told Lonely Planet Travel News.

3. Central Park, New York City, USA

As one of the most famous green spaces in the world, the gigantic Central Park spreads across 843 acres and features elm-lined walkways and European-style gardens as well as an outdoor theatre, all of which proved to be incredibly Instagram-worthy in 2017.

4. Tour Eiffel, Paris, France

It’s estimated that over 300 million people have visited the iconic Eiffel tower since 1889, and it is perhaps the most easily recognised tourist attractions around the world.

5. Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo, Japan

Opened in 1983 as the first Disney theme park outside of the United States, the ever popular Tokyo Disneyland recently announced plans for expansion estimated to cost over $2 billion.

6. Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Orlando, USA

Of all the locations at the unfenced, 40-square-mile Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, Cinderella’s Castle as Disney’s Magic Kingdom is perhaps the most iconic, drawing endless crowds all year round.

7. Musée du Louvre, Paris, France

The world’s most visited museum, Musée du Louvre not only offers a stunning collection of over 35,000 pieces of work from iconic artists such as da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rembrandt, it is also an iconic spot for budding photographers, with the 21-metre-high Grande Pyramide designed by Chinese-born American architect IM Pe proving especially popular.

8. Brooklyn Bridge, New York City, USA

“The Brooklyn Bridge is a great subject to photograph, the massive stone pillars give a fantastic contrast with the fine steel cables. These cables look best when seen from the sidewalk at the centre of the bridge, giving them a delightful symmetric feature,” tilt-shift photographer Jasper Léonard told Lonely Planet Travel News.

9. Disney California Adventure Park, Anaheim, USA

Taking three spots in total on a list that spans the entire world, it’s clear that Disney has serious pulling power, with the Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim proving to be the ninth most Instagrammed location of 2017.

10. Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas, USA

With its vast collection of casinos, high-end restaurants, hotels and entertainment facilities, not to mention its iconic and dizzying neon lights, it’s no wonder that the Las Vegas strip in Nevada managed to take a place in the top ten most instagrammed locations of 2017.
