If you want to see America’s Death Valley spring to life, this may be the year to do it.
Officials in Death Valley National Park think the park may see a rare ‘super bloom’ this year, filling the desert valley with wildflowers. The park released a video about the prospect of the bloom as part of a video podcast series co-produced by the National Park Service.
“It’s very rare to have a good bloom in Death Valley”, said Alan Van Valkenburg, a park ranger, in the video.
Death Valley National Park spans California and Nevada and is better known for its barren landscapes, sand dunes and canyons than it is for its wildflowers.
There are always some flowers in the park, but now officials think the conditions may be favourable to a super bloom, which only happens about once a decade. Van Valkenburg said there are many seeds in the valley waiting to sprout and when there are perfect conditions, the seeds can all sprout at once. However, the super bloom can be very brief.
“If you get the chance to see a bloom in Death Valley, especially a super bloom, you should take the opportunity to see it because it could be a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said.
