Strangers line up to help injured tourist in Thailand

People in Thailand have lined up to assist a British backpacker who was severely injured after she was hit by a car while riding a moped in Chiang Mai.

Twenty-one-year-old Lucy Hill was travelling through Thailand on a gap year when the accident occurred. She was left with a broken pelvis and has had to undergo surgery. She is in need of blood transfusions after suffering from anaemia following an operation. Unfortunately, her blood type, A-Negative, is quite rare and less than one percent of Thai people have negative blood types.

Her friend, Lauren Hall, was travelling with Hill and took to Facebook after the accident asking any foreign travellers or residents in Chiang Mai who may be more likely to have negative blood types to contact her or go to the hospital and say they’d like to donate to Hill.

Hall wrote in her post: “I understand it is your holiday but this is my friend. It doesn’t take long and it will do a great thing. My friend wore a helmet and did nothing wrong”.

The post was shared more than 100,000 times. According to media reports, dozens of people lined up at the Thai hospital in order to donate and some much needed blood was received.

Hill was from a community near Manchester and had graduated from Leeds Beckett University last year, reports the Manchester Evening News. She had left to take a gap year, leaving on 3 January.

People who can donate are now being told to contact the Red Cross in Chiang Mai, reports Hue Wire, reports the Evening News.
