A new report makes the worrying claim that almost a third of the world’s cactus species are endangered.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature says that habitat destruction and illegal removal by collectors means that the plants are in serious decline. The problem is particularly acute in Mexico which has over 700 species, many of which are at severe risk, but other areas badly affected are southern Brazil and neighbouring Uruguay.
