Sleep overnight in a yellow cab in New York without running up the meter

The streets of New York are thronged with yellow cabs, and those seeking a fun night’s accommodation can now stay in one overnight through Airbnb. Visitors to the Big Apple may not be able to fulfil their Carrie Bradshaw fantasies by staying in a classic Brooklyn brownstone apartment, but the star of ‘Sex and the City’ was always hopping in and out of yellow cabs.

Staying in a taxi overnight might appeal to those seeking quirky accommodation, it is parked in Long Island in the borough of Queens, located within ten minutes of Times Square. It is also legal to sleep in a car there. The renovated cab has a full-sized bed, pillows and blankets, and air conditioning. For just $39 per night, two people can stay in what was formerly a working taxi, in service since 2002 driving New Yorkers up and down the busy Manhattan streets. As a classy touch, owner Jonathan Powley offers those who come to stay a turn-down service with ‘fresh flowers, fresh fruit and a warm welcome note.’

Obviously as it’s a vehicle, there are limitations on what can be offered. Those who choose to stay in the cab should note that there are no shower facilities, but a list of gyms where renters can wash is provided. There is a portable camping toilet, but electronics will have to be charged at nearby cafés.

On the upside, those who stay there will enjoy a unique experience, as well as being able to take in a glorious skyline view of Manhattan across the water. Powley says that the Hunter’s Point neighbourhood the cab is parked in, is one of the safest in New York, and most of the guests so far have been young backpackers who have loved the unique experience. Check out the full details here.
