The number of visitors who can attend the annual Lantern Festival in Shanghai has been limited this year. Controls will be put in place when visitor numbers reach 20,000 people and the gates will be completely shut if numbers reach 40,000.

The limits have been imposed after the lantern festival was cancelled in 2015. The festival, which is held at the famous Yuyuan Gardens & Bazaar, features numerous giant lanterns, including one of the legendary Monkey King for the Year of the Monkey. The festival opened on 26 January and runs for one month. Lanterns are lit every evening from 5.30-8pm. Read more: shanghaidaily.com
