Scientists crack open world’s oldest bottle of champagne

Scientists in France have opened and tested a 170-year-old bottle of champagne thought to be the world’s oldest. The bottle, one of 168 that were found in a shipwreck on the bottom of the Baltic Sea in 2010, no longer had any labels but has been traced back to well-known champagne-makers Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin (VCP). The champagne was found to be much higher in sugar content and three times sweeter than champagnes today and the latest analysis seems to suggest that the sea floor conditions are perfect for champagne storage.
