The Pyramid of Cestius, constructed around 2000 years ago as a tomb for the Roman magistrate Caius Cestius has undergone a €2 million restoration paid for by the Japanese clothing magnate Yuzo Yagi.

The pyramid, which is located next to a busy traffic intersection, was blackened by decades of grime, but that has now been cleaned off to reveal the creamy white Carrara marble beneath. Visitors who reserve a place on one of the twice-monthly tours can now explore the tomb themselves, squeezing through the narrow corridor that leads to the frescoed burial chamber.
