Red, white or em, blue? Spain’s La Rioja region now producing a BLUE wine

Move over Rosé,  a wine company in Spain has created blue wine (yes, it’s real!).

Dubbed as the world’s first blue wine, Gik created the beverage from Spanish grapes from the La Rioja, León, and Castilla-La Mancha regions.

The company made the wine for young people – they believe that traditional wines can be elitist.

Gik says on its website: “Try to forget everything you know about wine. Try to unlearn the hundreds of protected wine designations of origin, the complex and demanding service standards and everything that sommelier said at a tasting course to which you were invited.”

Instead, they ask that you buy Gik. A wine created by “young people without any wine tradition”.

According to food website Eater, the wine gets its colour from a combination of “anthocyanin (a pigment found in grape skin) and indigo (a dye extracted from the Isatis tinctoria plant)” and contains a non-caloric sweetener. And for those who are wondering what blue wine is like – it has a similar taste to sweet white wine and is made from a blend of red and white grapes sourced from vineyards in around Spain. A 750ml bottle of the 11.5% ABV drink sells for about £7.50.
