Britain’s biggest Quidditch tournament took place this weekend. The British Quidditch Cup attracted 16 teams when it was first held in November 2013 in Oxford, and this year’s competition featured 23 teams. It was held at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, which stood in for Wayne Manor in The Dark Night Rises. Players are airbourne in JK Rowling’s fantasy series, but in this form, described as ‘rugby mixed with dodgeball’, they run with broomsticks clenched between their thighs. ‘We want people to discover what we do and see us as a legitimate sport,’ said QuidditchUK president Amy Maidment, ‘rather than imitating Harry Potter.’ Southampton Quidditch Club beat defending champions the Radcliffe Chimeras to take this year’s prize.
