Portugal’s sand sculpture festival battered by rain

The Algarve’s international sand sculpture festival has been temporarily closed after torrential rains battered Portugal’s southern coast, destroying some of the sculpture works.

Organisers of the event, which is open to the public all year in the village of Pêra, said the festival would be closed until at least Wednesday while some of the giant temporary sculptures are repaired. FIESA is thought to be the largest sand sculpture festival in the world. Each year, around 40,000 tons of sand is used to build the sculptures, which number more than 100.
