Pope Francis has officially declared the start of the Catholic Jubilee Holy Year by opening up a door in the wall of St Peter’s Basilica that is usually bricked up.

The pope said, ‘Aperite mihi Porta Iustitiae,’ which means, ‘open to me the gates of justice’ in Latin, and then pushed open the huge ceremonial doors and stepped through. He was followed through the doors by his predecessor Benedict XVI and dozens of cardinals, bishops, nuns and monks. Thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit the Vatican City and walk through the ceremonial door during the Holy Year of Mercy, which runs until 20 November 2016. Read more: thelocal.it
