A service offering taxis with female drivers, just for women passengers has been launched in Cairo. Pink Taxi’s cars are equipped with cameras and SOS buttons, and aim to provide a safe way for women to travel in the Egyptian capital.
According to the UN, 99% of Egyptian women are subjected to sexual harassment, and a significant proportion of this takes place on public transport and in taxis.The service has been controversial so far, as Pink Taxis are more expensive than regular taxis, meaning only some can afford the privilege. Some have argued that ‘gender segregation’ does not help address Egyptian’s problem either. Read more: edition.cnn.com
