ITV news reports that the 100-carat stone is one of only five diamonds of such quality ever to go on sale worldwide. Sotheby’s says the gem will be in London for a short time before being sent onto its selling destination.

According to Sotheby’s, it joins an exclusive club of only five diamonds of similar quality, which weigh more than 100 carats, ever to be sold worldwide. The head of Sotheby’s Jewellery Department in New York, Gary Schuler, said it was the first true emerald-cut diamond over 100 carats which would be put up for auction. He said it was so transparent, he could only describe it “to a pool of icy water.”

After hosting it in the Bond Street Gallery the diamond is scheduled to appear in a number of cities including Dubai, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Doha.

It’s ultimate destinations is New York where it will be auctioned off on 21 April.
