A pair of orphaned polar bear cubs, which were brought to a Canadian zoo, has made their debut to the public.

The cubs were living near the Northern Manitoba community of Churchill – nicknamed the polar bear capital of the world – which is famous for the number of the bears that frequent the area and a tourist centre for those looking for a glimpse of the large mammals.

The cubs’ mother was accidentally killed by a resident trying to scare her away from a building with a cracker shell, which is intended to make noise and frighten the animal without harming it.

As cubs must stay with their mothers for two winters to learn to survive, the 11-month-old cubs were brought to the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at the Assiniboine Zoo in Winnipeg.

The cubs just completed a 30-day quarantine and can now be viewed by the public.

The zoo is also trying to raise funds for the zoo’s polar bear rescue team by allowing people who donate to vote on names for the two male cubs.
