The Norwegian government is proposing to slash subsidies awarded to fur farmers. The controversial industry currently receives substantial state aid and the reforms would cut financial assistance by more than 17.8 million kroner per year, over half of the current total subsidy. Representatives from the fur farming industry say that the cuts would threaten rural communities who are reliant on income from the farms, while animal rights groups say the vast majority of Norwegians do not want their taxes to fund the industry.
