It was the strongest tremor since a 6.3 magnitude quake levelled areas of Christchurch back in February 2011, killing more than 180 people. Some areas of the city are still rebuilding following the earthquake.

Sunday’s quake was about 31 kilometres deep and 15 kilometres east of Christchurch, reports the Sydney Morning Herald, and was felt around the South Island.

The earthquake hit in the early afternoon, around 1:13 pm local time, and was strong enough to shake buildings and topple items within homes. It caused rocks to fall along the coast and cliffs to give way. YouTube user YeahNah Productions captured drone footage showing where a cliff had given way on the coast following the quake from Sumner beach, Scarborough Hill and Taylor’s Mistake.

Following Sunday’s tremor, the likelihood of another quake between 5 and 5.9 magnitude and 6 and 6.9 magnitude has increased, but the probability of a quake at greater than 7 magnitude is still under 1%, reports the New Zealand Herald.
