A small earthquake has rattled a wide area of greater Los Angeles, even shaking buildings in the city centre.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude-3.7 quake hit at 7.01am local time near Carson. The significant depth of seven miles meant fewer people were likely to feel it.

Agency seismologists said the quake was near the Newport-Inglewood fault, but it was too small to determine exactly which fault caused it.

Los Angeles police said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and seismologists said none should be expected for a quake of this size.

There were hundreds of reports on the Geological Survey’s website of people feeling the quake.
