Nicaraguan volcano dormant for 110 years, emits ash column

The iconic Momotombo volcano, located just outside Managua, Nicaragua, has erupted for the first time since 1905, emitting a large column of ash into the air.

While there are not yet reports of lava flow, local residents have told the media that the volcanic gases are strong and have affected at least five villages in the surrounding area. The volcano has not experienced a major explosion since the turn of the twentieth century, but it did emit a small lava flow in 1980 and released volcanic gas in 2006.
