New York’s ever-expanding tourist industry could get further legroom for visitors by expanding along the East River Esplanade which has been neglected for years. Over the next year plans are afoot to open up the 107th St. pier location to vendors as renovation works takes place.
Changes which could provide immediate improvement to the area includes the replacing or repairing of seat benches. City Assembleman Robert Rodriguez says he hopes to get public and private donations for the half-million dollars it will take to get the work done. The local representative’s vision is to make the waterfront from East 60th St. to East 125th St. more inviting for people to use. He believes the work can be done in a year and his longer term vision is to build a pedestrian walkway over the FDR Drive within ten years.
