New York may be one of the world’s most visited tourist spots but that hasn’t stopped Governor Andrew Cuomo from targeting further growth through winter tourism. He also wants to focus on Canadians coming south to shop in a new campaign he has announced.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Governor unveiled a number of initiatives for winter tourism including ‘Ski NY Spring Break’. This will offer generous discounts across the state from the coming weekend until the end of March in the hope of tempting skiing tourists to the region.

Running hand-in-hand with that scheme is a ‘I Shop NY’ campaign in conjunction with the state’s Retail Council. This will see a number of New York stores advertised in chosen Canadian markets and will run from the 22nd of March to the end of the first week in April.

Mr Cuomo said that tourism had soared in the state over the past four years, due to the ‘I Love NY’ and the Adirondack Winter and Summer Challenges. He wanted to increase the possibility of getting more people to visit New York at this time of year, declaring that the state had some of the most “beautiful mountain, vistas and attractions in the world.” The Wall Street Journal also reports that the ski promotion will include a downloadable coupon for 25% off such items as equipment rental, lesson and lift ticket packages.
