
Did the Scots and Irish beat the Vikings to Iceland?

New research suggests that people from Scotland and Ireland settled in Iceland before the arrival of the Vikings in 872. The theory that Irish and Scottish monks established settlements before the arrival of the Vikings in the 9th century is supported by historical documents, but there has never been archaeological evidence to support the claims. New research comparing early Christian crosses found in caves in southern Iceland with those from Ireland and Scotland have shown numerous similarities, while dating suggests some of the man-made caves were dug out from the rock in around 800.
